What Does the Name Nessie Mean?

Nessie is a Scottish diminutive of Agnes. Agnes comes from the Greek name Hagnē (Ἁγνή), the feminine form of hagnos, meaning pure, chaste, or holy. The meaning of Nessie is therefore the same as that of Agnes: pure, holy. A later Christian association with the Latin word agnus, meaning lamb, is symbolic rather than etymological. The given name is not a form of the Scottish geographical word ness (a headland), and it is separate from the Loch Ness nickname.

Nessie Name History & Origins

Agnes was widely used in medieval Europe because of Saint Agnes, a young Roman martyr venerated from the early fourth century. The name traveled from Greek into Latin as Agnes and then into English, French, and Scots. In Scotland, Agnes was common, and the affectionate suffix -ie produced Nessie as a pet form, along with Ness. The Scottish name Senga is Agnes spelled backward. Nessie has also been used as an independent given name in English-speaking countries.

The Loch Ness Monster has been called Nessie since the twentieth century, after newspaper reports brought the creature to wide attention. That nickname comes from the lake, Loch Ness, not from Agnes. Loch Ness is named for the River Ness; the older river name is not clearly understood. This monstrous nickname is a separate development from the personal name.
