What Does the Name Nerea Mean?

Nerea is a feminine given name of Greek origin, the feminine counterpart of Nereus (Greek Νηρεύς), the old sea god of Greek myth. It belongs with the masculine forms Nereo, used in Spanish and Italian, and Latin Nereus. Nereus is traditionally explained as coming from a Greek word for water or wetness, most often cited as νηρός, "wet, moist," which is why "of the sea" is a customary interpretation rather than a literal translation. Because the name is very old and appears in the earliest Greek poetry, the exact derivation is not certain.

Nerea Name History & Origins

Nereus belongs to the oldest layer of Greek myth. Hesiod, in the Theogony, makes him a son of Pontus (the sea) and Gaia (the earth), older than Poseidon, and calls him the Old Man of the Sea who never lies; other Greek writers describe him as a kindly deity who could foretell the future and change his shape. With the sea nymph Doris he fathered the fifty Nereids. Nerea is a feminine form of this name made with the ending -a, following the usual pattern of Spanish and Italian feminine names.

Christian use of the masculine name goes back to Rome. Nereus and Achilleus were venerated there as martyrs; their tomb lay in the cemetery of Domitilla on the Via Ardeatina, and Pope Damasus wrote an epitaph for them in the fourth century. They are named in the Roman Canon of the Mass, and their feast is May 12. The Acts that describe their trial and death are later legends rather than contemporary records, but the Roman cult itself is documented.

In Spain the feminine Nerea is common, particularly in the Basque Country and nearby regions, and it is also used in Spanish-speaking Latin America and in Italy. Related feminine names in Spanish include Nereida, taken from the Nereids. The wide use of Nerea in Spain is fairly recent, growing mainly over the later twentieth century rather than reaching back to older tradition.
