What Does the Name Nehemiah Mean?
Nehemiah is a Hebrew name meaning "the Lord has comforted" or "the Lord comforts." It comes from the biblical Hebrew נְחֶמְיָה (Nechemyah), a compound of two elements: the verb נָחַם (nacham), meaning "to comfort," "to console," or "to be sorry," and the shortened divine name יָהּ (Yah), a form of the Israelite name for God, Yahweh. Grammatically the name reads as a statement about God's action, not as a description of the person who bears it.
The verb nacham also carries the sense of relenting or changing one's mind, so a few explanations gloss the name as "Yahweh has relented" or "Yahweh has shown compassion." The customary translation in Bible translations and name references, however, is "comfort," and that is the sense reflected in the standard English rendering.
Nehemiah Name History & Origins
The name appears in the Hebrew Bible, where the best-known bearer is the Jewish official who served as cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes I. According to the Book of Nehemiah, he traveled to Jerusalem around 445 BCE, directed the rebuilding of the city wall, and carried out religious and social reforms. A second Nehemiah is named among the leaders who returned from Babylonia with Zerubbabel in the lists preserved in Ezra 2:2 and Nehemiah 7:7.
The English form passed through the Greek of the Septuagint, Νεεμίας (Neemias), and the Latin Nehemias of the Vulgate. The Hebrew letter chet (ח) in the middle of the name was not carried over into the Greek spelling, which is why Greek lacks an h at that point, while the Latin and later English forms supply one; the final -iah reflects the divine element Yah.
The name continued in use among Jews after the biblical period and appears in rabbinic literature. It entered English through the Bible, and after the Reformation it was adopted by English-speaking Protestants, particularly among groups that favored Old Testament names. Related forms include the Hebrew Nechemyah, the Greek Neemias, and the Latin and post-biblical Nehemias; the English Nehemiah is the form familiar from English Bible translations.
