What Does the Name Nefertiti Mean?

Nefertiti is an ancient Egyptian name meaning "the beautiful one has come" or "a beautiful woman has come." It comes from the Egyptian word nfr, "beautiful," "good," or "perfect," with the feminine ending .t, giving nfr.t, "the beautiful one." The second element, jy.tj, is a form of the verb jy, "to come," and is usually rendered "has come" or "who has come." The full name is transliterated nfr.t-jy.tj. It is a sentence-like name, a common pattern in ancient Egyptian, and its literal sense is close to its customary English translation.

Nefertiti Name History & Origins

Nefertiti is an ancient Egyptian name from the 18th Dynasty, written in hieroglyphs as nfr.t-jy.tj. It is best known from Queen Nefertiti, the Great Royal Wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten, who ruled in the 14th century BCE. Inscriptions from Akhetaten (modern Amarna), the capital Akhenaten founded, record her name and show her taking part in the worship of the Aten. The name is known mainly from the Amarna Period and from the queen's own monuments.

The name entered modern English through Egyptology rather than through the Bible or classical literature. In 1912, the German archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt found a painted limestone bust of Nefertiti in the workshop of the sculptor Thutmose at Amarna. The bust is now in Berlin and is widely reproduced. English speakers use the Egyptological spelling Nefertiti as a given name, though it is not a traditional English form. Some inscriptions connect the queen with the additional name Neferneferuaten, "Beautiful are the beauties of the Aten," but that is a separate name and does not change the derivation of Nefertiti.
