What Does the Name Nazari Mean?

Nazari is a form of the Latin name Nazarius, generally explained as "from Nazareth" and, by extension, "consecrated to God." The Latin name was built with the suffix -arius on the place name Nazareth, which appears in Greek as Nazara and in the New Testament adjective Nazōraios, "a Nazarene." A competing explanation connects the name to Hebrew nazir, "one set apart, consecrated," the word behind the nazirite vow. Because early Christian writers already associated Nazareth with consecration, the two readings were often blended, and the precise derivation is still disputed; "from Nazareth" is the more widely accepted one.

Nazari Name History & Origins

The Latin Nazarius was borne by a saint venerated at Rome and Milan. Tradition describes Nazarius as a Roman martyr put to death with a companion, Celsus, and the two are commemorated on July 28. Bishop Ambrose of Milan announced the finding of their relics in 395, and churches dedicated to San Nazaro were built in Milan and other cities. The surviving accounts of the martyrdom are late and legendary, so they are better read as devotional literature than as reliable history.

Through the saint's cult the name entered ordinary use across Christian Europe: Italian Nazario, Spanish Nazario and Nazaria, French Nazaire, Portuguese Nazário, and the feminine Nazarena. Nazari belongs to this family. It is the form the name takes in Georgian (ნაზარი), and closely related forms are used in Slavic traditions, such as Russian Nazariy (Назарий) and Ukrainian Nazariy (Назарій), alongside the shorter Nazar.

In Italy and the Spanish-speaking world, Nazari is found more often as a surname than as a given name, and the Italian surname descends from the personal name Nazario. A similarly spelled surname in Iran and Central Asia has a separate origin: Persian نظری comes from Arabic naẓar, "sight, view, opinion," and means roughly "theoretical." That formation is unrelated to Nazareth or to the saint's name.
