The Zulu name, from southern Africa, is generally explained as "sweet" or "pleasant," from the isiZulu word nandi. It is given to girls and is unrelated in origin to the Sanskrit name, which it only resembles in sound.
Nandi Name History & Origins
In Hindu mythology, Nandi is the white bull who serves as the mount and gatekeeper of Shiva. Puranic accounts describe him as the son of the sage Shilada, who performed penance to obtain a son equal to Shiva; Shiva granted him a child who was a portion of himself. Nandi is honored as Shiva's foremost devotee, and stone images of Nandi sit facing the inner sanctum in Shiva temples. Because of this religious role, Nandi is used in India as a male given name and as a surname.
In Zulu history the name is associated with Queen Nandi kaBhebhe, mother of Shaka, the founder of the Zulu Kingdom. She was a daughter of Bhebhe, a chief of the eLangeni, and gave birth to Shaka around 1787; after he became king she was honored as queen mother until her death in 1827. The name Nandi is given to girls among Zulu speakers.
The Nandi of Kenya, a Kalenjin people, and the county and hills named for them, are a separate term not connected to the personal name.
