What Does the Name Nachman Mean?
Nachman is a Hebrew masculine name meaning "comforter" or "consoler." It comes from the Hebrew root נחם (n - ḥ - m), which carries the sense of comforting, consoling, or being consoled. The name is formed from that root with the ending -an, a pattern found in Hebrew names. It is related by root, but not identical, to Nachum (Nahum) and Menachem (Menahem), both of which also express comfort or consolation. The literal sense "one who comforts" is the customary meaning; it is not a later symbolic interpretation. Nachman should not be confused with the similarly spelled Naaman (נַעֲמָן), which comes from a different root meaning "pleasant."
Nachman Name History & Origins
Nachman is an old Hebrew name. Several Babylonian sages named Nachman are cited in the Talmud, including Rabbi Nachman bar Yaakov and Rabbi Nachman bar Yitzchak. In the Middle Ages, the name is especially associated with Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman (1194 - 1270), the Catalan rabbi, physician, and Bible commentator known as the Ramban and, in later non-Hebrew sources, as Nachmanides - a patronymic meaning "son of Nachman." His father's name shows Nachman in use in 12th-century Catalonia. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov (1772 - 1810), a great-grandson of the Baal Shem Tov, founded the Breslov Hasidic movement; his teachings and stories are collected in Likutei Moharan and Sippurei Ma'asiyot. Ashkenazi Jews traditionally pronounced the name with stress on the first syllable, while Israeli Hebrew stresses the final syllable.
