What Does the Name Naara Mean?
Naara is a feminine name best explained as a form of the biblical Hebrew name Naʿarah (נַעֲרָה), meaning "girl," "young woman," or "maiden." It is built on the Hebrew root naʿar, "youth" or "young man," with the feminine ending -ah. The same word, naʿarah, is the ordinary Hebrew noun for a young woman, so the personal name has exactly the same form as the common noun.
English Bibles normally spell the name Naarah. The spelling Naara matches Greek and later European forms that leave off the final h and do not mark the Hebrew letter ayin at the start of the second syllable. A similar-sounding element exists in Sanskrit, where nara (नर) means "man" or "human being" and nāra means "belonging to man" or "water"; Nara is one of the two sages known together as Nara-Narayana. That is a different word in a different language, and it is not established that personal names spelled Naara come from it.
Naara Name History & Origins
The name appears in the Hebrew Bible in two places. In 1 Chronicles 4:5 - 6, Naarah is one of the two wives of Ashhur, a descendant of Judah, and is named as the mother of Ahuzzam, Hepher, Temeni, and Haahashtari. In Joshua 16:7 the same name, spelled Naarath in English Bibles, belongs to a town on the border of the territory of Ephraim, near Jericho and the Jordan River.
Greek translations of the Hebrew Scriptures write the name in forms such as Νααρα, with no final h; Greek also had no letter for the Hebrew ayin, so that consonant went unmarked. Later Latin and European texts commonly wrote the name as Naara as well, while English Bibles settled on Naarah for the woman and Naarath for the town. The spelling Naara therefore preserves a Greek-style transliteration rather than the standard English biblical form.
Outside the Bible, Naara is an uncommon given name. It is sometimes chosen in Jewish communities as a Hebrew name, and it also appears as a variant spelling of the separate name Nara, which has its own history.
