What Does the Name Myla Mean?
Myla is generally explained as an English spelling of Mila, a feminine name found across Slavic-speaking countries. It comes from the Slavic root mil, meaning "dear," "gracious," or "beloved."
That root is a building block of many Slavic names. In Ludmila, for instance, the elements are ljud ("people") and mila ("dear"), so Mila works as a short form of it; the same root appears in Milena, Milan, Milica, and Miloslava.
In Romance languages, Mila also appears as a short form of Milagros (Spanish, "miracles") and of Emilia or Amelia. That is a separate line of development, not the Slavic one, and it gives a different sense.
Myla is sometimes described instead as a feminine form of Milo, but Milo's own origin is disputed - Greek milon ("apple") and Latin miles ("soldier") are both proposed - so that connection is uncertain and would imply a different meaning.
Myla Name History & Origins
The Slavic names built on mil are old and widely distributed. The best-known early bearer is Saint Ludmila, a Bohemian duchess of the ninth and tenth centuries, grandmother of Saint Wenceslaus and venerated as a martyr after her death in 921. Her cult spread her name through the Czech lands and into other Slavic regions, and short forms such as Mila and Milena have been used independently in Czech, Slovak, Polish, Serbian, Croatian, Bulgarian, Russian, and Ukrainian.
Mila traveled into Western Europe and the English-speaking world largely through Slavic immigration and through familiarity with Slavic names. English speakers respelled it in several ways, and the y in Myla fits an English habit of writing the long "i" sound with a y in feminine names. Myla is used as a girl's name in English and remains much less common than Mila or the related short forms Milly and Milla.
What cannot be traced precisely is whether every English use of Myla descends from Slavic Mila, from a Romance short form such as Milagros or Emilia, or from an independent respelling by English-speaking parents. These strands overlap in sound and spelling, and the written record does not clearly separate them.
