What Does the Name Montse Mean?
Montse is a Catalan short form of Montserrat. Its meaning is inherited from the Catalan place name Montserrat, which combines mont ('mountain') and serrat ('serrated, jagged'), the latter from Latin serratus ('saw-toothed'). Literally, Montserrat means 'serrated mountain' or 'jagged mountain,' a description of the mountain in Catalonia where the monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat stands. Montse has no separate etymology; it is a familiar clipping of Montserrat and carries the same literal meaning. The connection with the Virgin of Montserrat is a later religious association, not part of the word's original sense.
Montse Name History & Origins
The mountain named Montserrat in Catalonia gave its name to the Marian shrine of Santa Maria de Montserrat. A Benedictine monastery was founded there in the 11th century, and devotion to the Virgin of Montserrat, whose Romanesque image is known as La Moreneta, spread through Catalonia and beyond. From the place name and the title of the Virgin, Montserrat became a female given name in Catalan-speaking regions. Montse developed as a familiar short form of Montserrat, formed by clipping the longer name. It is used as a standalone given name in Catalonia and in other areas where Catalan or Spanish is spoken. In Spanish-speaking countries, Montserrat is also used as a given name, sometimes alongside the short form Montse.
