What Does the Name Miro Mean?

Miro is mainly a Slavic masculine name meaning "peace," from the Slavic element mir. In most Slavic languages mir means "peace"; in Russian it also means "world." Miro is above all a shortened form of longer compound names built with that element, especially Miroslav (from mir, "peace," and slava, "glory") and Mirko, itself a pet form of Miroslav and similar names. The same element appears in Casimir (Polish Kazimierz), and in Portuguese and Spanish Miro is often a short form of Casimiro.

A separate and less certain explanation derives the Italian name Miro from the Latin adjective mirus, "wonderful, strange," which survives in Italian as miro. That etymology is proposed rather than established, and Italian Miro could instead be a borrowing of the Slavic short form. The two explanations are independent: the Latin one does not account for the Slavic use, and the Slavic one does not explain an Italian name taken directly from Latin.

Miro Name History & Origins

Compound Slavic names built with mir were common in the Middle Ages, and everyday speech shortened them by dropping the second element, so that Miroslav yielded Miro alongside Mirko. In Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, and Slovakia, Miro has since become a given name in its own right, not only a nickname.

The name is recorded very early in the Iberian peninsula in a different tradition: Miro was king of the Suebi in Galicia until his death in 583. The Suebi were a Germanic people, so that sixth-century Galician name does not lie behind the Slavic or Italian forms.

In Italy and in Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries, Miro frequently serves as the short form of Casimiro, the Romance descendant of Slavic Kazimierz, which keeps the mir element. In Finland, Miro appears as a modern masculine given name; Finnish has no native name element or word that would explain it. The Catalan surname Miró, as in the painter Joan Miró, is a separate family name and is distinct from the given name.
