What Does the Name Mir Mean?
Mir means "peace" in Slavic naming and "chief" or "leader" in Persian and South Asian use, and the two come from unrelated words. In Slavic languages the name is formed from the element mir, "peace," an old word that also developed the senses "world" and "community." It is the second half of many compound Slavic names, including Miroslav ("peace" + "glory"), Jaromir, and Krešimir; Mir is often a short form of such names and is also given on its own.
The other Mir is Persian and South Asian: mīr (میر), a title meaning "chief," "leader," or "prince," shortened from the Arabic amīr, "commander." It is not related to the Slavic word, which it merely resembles in sound and spelling.
Mir Name History & Origins
Compound Slavic names ending in -mir are recorded from the medieval period. Kings of Croatia in the tenth and eleventh centuries bore the names Krešimir and Miroslav, and the Bohemian duke Jaromír ruled in the early eleventh century. Short, familiar forms of such names were used in everyday speech, and Mir is used as an independent given name mainly in Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, and Bosnia. The same root supplies the short forms Mirko and the female name Mira. In Russian, mir also named the peasant village community, and before the spelling reform of 1918 the word for "peace" (миръ) was written differently from the word for "world" (міръ), even though the two sound alike.
Mir as a title goes back to the Arabic amīr, "commander," which passed into Persian as mīr and was applied to chieftains, noblemen, and Sayyids. In the Indian subcontinent it became a hereditary title and part of names and titles such as Mirza, from amīr-zāda, "son of a prince." Mir Jafar, installed as nawab of Bengal after the Battle of Plassey in 1757, and Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam of Hyderabad, are well-known bearers. The name remains common as a given name and surname in Pakistan and northern India.
