What Does the Name Milo Mean?
Milo is a masculine given name whose meaning is uncertain. More than one unrelated origin has been proposed, so it is not a single root with several shades of meaning.
The most common explanation treats the name as Germanic: a short form of names formed with a root meaning "mild" or "gracious," connected with Old High German milti ("mild"). A second explanation derives it from the Slavic element mil, meaning "dear" or "gracious," the same root that appears in Milan and Milena. A third points to the ancient Greek name Milōn (Μίλων), borne by the athlete Milo of Croton, though the meaning of that Greek name is itself unclear. Because these are separate possibilities and none is decisively established, no single meaning can be given with confidence.
Milo Name History & Origins
The earliest well-known bearer is the Greek athlete Milo of Croton, a wrestler of the 6th century BC who won repeated victories at the Olympic and other games and became proverbial for strength in ancient writing. His name, Greek Milōn (Μίλων), is an early form, but it is not certain that the later European name descends from it.
The name also appears in the Roman world as the cognomen of Titus Annius Milo, a 1st-century BC politician defended by Cicero in the speech Pro Milone. In medieval Europe, Milo was used as a given name in Latin documents; Milo, bishop of Trier in the 8th century, was later venerated as a saint.
The name appears in England after the Norman Conquest and is recorded there in the 12th century; it stayed in use through the Middle Ages and also lies behind surnames. In modern literature, Milo is the young hero of Norton Juster's The Phantom Tollbooth and the mess officer Milo Minderbinder in Joseph Heller's Catch-22, both published in 1961; these are uses of an already existing name, not its source.
