What Does the Name Milam Mean?
Milam is an English surname whose meaning is not firmly established. The explanation most often given is that it is a variant of Milham, also found as Mileham or Mylam, a family name taken from an English place name. Place names of that shape usually join Old English mylen, "mill," with hām, "homestead" or "village," which would give a literal sense of "mill homestead." That reading is plausible, but nothing fixes it as the origin of every family that uses the name, and the derivation should be treated as uncertain.
The similar-looking name Milan is a separate case. It is an Italian habitational name taken from the city of Milan, which goes back to the Latin place name Mediolanum. A resemblance in spelling does not by itself show a shared origin, and Milam is not generally derived from Milan.
Milam Name History & Origins
Milam is chiefly a surname. It is uncommon in Britain and is found mainly in the United States, where families of the name were living in the South by the late 1700s. Because the surname is rare and its early spellings vary, the bearers cannot all be traced to a single line.
The best-known bearer is Benjamin Rush Milam, called Ben Milam. He was born in Kentucky in 1788 and served in the War of 1812. He later traded in Mexico, took part in the early Mexican independence movement, and in 1835 joined the Texas Revolution. In December of that year he led an assault on Mexican troops at San Antonio de Béxar and was killed in the fighting. Texas remembers him, and Milam County, created in 1836, was named for him.
Milam is also used, though rarely, as a first name in the United States, following the common American practice of turning surnames into given names. The given name appears mainly in the South, and in Texas it carries the association with Ben Milam. How much his reputation affected parents' choices is not documented.
