What Does the Name Miko Mean?
Miko has more than one origin, so it carries more than one meaning. In Japanese, miko (巫女) is a word for a shrine maiden, a young woman who serves at a Shinto shrine. As a girl's given name, Miko is normally written with kanji chosen by the family, and the meaning follows those characters rather than the sound alone; one common combination is 美子, from 美 ("beauty") and 子 ("child"), giving "beautiful child."
Separately, in Finland and elsewhere in Europe, Miko is a masculine name generally understood as a short form of Mikael, the Finnish form of Michael. Michael comes from Hebrew, and its customary meaning is "who is like God?" - a rhetorical question rather than a description.
Miko Name History & Origins
In Japan, miko has long denoted a female attendant at a Shinto shrine. Shrine maidens performed sacred dance (kagura) and, in earlier centuries, were credited with delivering oracles. The most elevated form of the role was the itsuki no miko, an unmarried imperial princess who served as priestess at Ise Shrine; the office is generally dated from around the seventh century and lapsed in the fourteenth. In the medieval and Edo periods, traveling miko who went from village to village to perform rituals and ask for offerings were a familiar presence. Izumo no Okuni, traditionally described as a miko, is credited in conventional accounts with founding the dance-drama that became kabuki. The girl's name Miko follows the older Japanese pattern of women's names ending in ko (子, "child"), which was especially widespread from the nineteenth century into the twentieth.
The European Miko belongs to a different tradition. Mikael is the Finnish form of Michael, and Mikko is the usual Finnish short form of that name; Miko appears alongside it as a masculine given name and as a surname. In this use the name is not Japanese at all, and the two traditions are unrelated despite the identical spelling.
