What Does the Name Mena Mean?

Mena has two established derivations. In Italian and Spanish, it is a feminine short form of Filomena, the local form of Philomena; that name comes from Greek Philomēna, commonly explained as "lover of strength" or "strongly loved," from philein ("to love") and menos ("strength, spirit"). The short form Mena keeps the final part of the longer name.

The spelling Mena is also used for the Arabic feminine name Muna (منى), from a root meaning "to wish" or "desire." In Egypt, Mena is an alternate spelling of Mina, a masculine name borne by Saint Menas; the derivation of that Egyptian Christian name is uncertain and should not be confused with the Arabic word for wishes.

Mena Name History & Origins

Philomena is an ancient Greek name, and Filomena became its Italian and Spanish form. A legendary early Christian martyr, Saint Philomena, was venerated under that name; her relics were found in Rome in 1802, and her cult expanded in the nineteenth century. The short form Mena drops the opening syllables of Filomena. The name also passed into use separately as a transliteration of Arabic Muna.

In Coptic Egypt, Mena or Mina is the name of Saint Menas, a third-century martyr. His shrine at Abu Mena, southwest of Alexandria, became an important pilgrimage site in late antiquity, and the name has remained in use among Egyptian Christians. Whether the saint's name goes back to an Egyptian or a Greek word is not settled.
