What Does the Name Mello Mean?
Mello has no securely established meaning as a given name. It is mainly a surname with separate Italian and Portuguese forms. The Italian Mello is generally a habitational name from Mello in Lombardy, so its sense is tied to that place rather than to a personal-name root. The Portuguese Mello is an older spelling of Melo, a surname linked to places in Portugal. The earlier meaning of those place names is uncertain; no reliable single translation can be given.
Mello Name History & Origins
The Italian surname is generally derived from Mello, a town in the Valtellina in Lombardy. Italian habitational surnames of this kind identified a family with a place of origin and became fixed family names in the late Middle Ages. The Portuguese Mello belongs to a separate tradition: it is an older spelling of Melo, a surname associated with Portuguese noble lineages and with places named Melo. Modern Portuguese usually writes the name Melo; the double-l form reflects older spelling conventions.
As a first name, Mello is uncommon and has no long independent tradition; it is best understood as a transferred surname. A well-known modern use is the alias Mello in the manga and anime Death Note. That fictional code name is a literary use, not evidence of the name's earliest history.
