What Does the Name Mccrae Mean?
Mccrae, usually written McCrae, is an English-language surname of Scottish Gaelic origin, generally explained as a variant of MacRae or McRae. It comes from the Gaelic Mac Raith (also written Mac Rath), meaning "son of Rath." The prefix Mac (often shortened to Mc) means "son of," while the personal name Rath or Raith is commonly connected with Gaelic rath, "grace" or "prosperity." The customary meaning is therefore "son of grace" or "son of prosperity." The exact sense of the early personal name is not certain, but it is not related to the English given name Rae or to unrelated names that happen to share the letters rae.
Mccrae Name History & Origins
The surname developed in the Scottish Highlands. In medieval Gaelic Scotland, hereditary surnames were formed from a father's name; Mac Raith became MacRae, McRae, and later McCrae as Gaelic names were written in English. The name is closely associated with Clan MacRae, whose Gaelic form is Clann Mhic Rath. The clan's traditional heartland was Kintail in Wester Ross, and its members served as hereditary constables of Eilean Donan Castle and as allies of the Mackenzies. The spelling McCrae is one of several Anglicized variants, with Mc- representing the shortened form of Mac.
As a given name, McCrae is a transferred use of the surname. It appears in English-speaking countries, especially Canada and the United States, where surnames are often used as first names. The surname is also known from John McCrae, the Canadian physician and poet who wrote "In Flanders Fields" during the First World War; this literary association is separate from the name's earlier Scottish origin and does not explain the given name's use.
