What Does the Name Mazi Mean?

Mazi is used in two unrelated ways. In Igbo, a language of southeastern Nigeria, mazi is an honorific title for a man, close in force to English sir or mister. It is placed before a man's name as a mark of respect and is also used as a name in its own right; it is a title of standing rather than a descriptive word with a separate literal translation.

Separately, Turkish mâzi means "the past." It comes from Arabic māḍī (ماضي), the active participle of maḍā, "to pass by, to go away," and in Arabic the same form also names the past tense in grammar. In Turkish it is chiefly a literary word for bygone time rather than a customary personal name, so its resemblance to the Igbo title is coincidental.

Mazi Name History & Origins

Among the Igbo, mazi belongs to a group of honorifics - alongside titles such as Nze, Ozo, and Ichie - that a man may carry in his community. It does the work of English "Mr." before a name. In the twentieth century, Igbo writers and public figures adopted Mazi as a fixed prefix, as in Mazi Mbonu Ojike, the nationalist and author. That habit carried the title into personal names in Nigeria and in Igbo communities elsewhere.

Turkish mâzi took a different route. It was borrowed from Arabic, where māḍī serves both as the grammatical term for the past tense and as a general word for what has gone by. Turkish poets and essayists have used mâzi when writing about memory and longing, but it stays a vocabulary word rather than a conventional given name in Turkey.
