What Does the Name Maxon Mean?
Maxon is an English-language surname that has also come into use as a given name, and its meaning is not firmly established. The explanation most often offered is that it is a patronymic - a name taken from a father's name - built on the short personal name Max, itself a pet form of Maximilian or Maximus. Those two names trace to the Latin adjective maximus, "greatest," which also served as a Roman cognomen, or family name. On this reading Maxon means "son of Max."
A second explanation connects the name with Maxton, a place name in Britain whose ending corresponds to the Old English tūn, "settlement" or "farm," attached to an older personal name. That would make Maxon a habitational surname, taken from a place rather than from a father. The two explanations are sometimes blended together, but they are not the same, and nothing in the surviving record clearly decides between them. Spellings such as Maxson and Maxen add further uncertainty, since it is not always clear whether they are the same name written differently or separate names that merely resemble one another.
Maxon Name History & Origins
Maxon is an uncommon English-language surname. It belongs to a small cluster of closely spelled family names - Maxson, Maxen, Maxin - whose forms have overlapped in English records, so that an individual family's line of descent is often hard to follow. The name is recorded in England and, from the colonial period onward, in North America.
Its use as a first name follows the wider modern habit of turning surnames into given names, and it also sits close to the short name Max, which English speakers knew through the German and Austrian name Maximilian. Maximilian was borne by Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor (ruled 1493 - 1519), and by Emperor Maximilian of Mexico (ruled 1864 - 1867), and the short form Max was long common in German-speaking Europe before it spread in English.
In recent fiction, Maxon is the name of Prince Maxon Schreave in Kiera Cass's The Selection series, which began in 2012. That is a modern literary association and not evidence of the name's origin.
