What Does the Name Matias Mean?
Matias is a form of Matthias, which comes from the Greek Maththias, a transliteration of the Hebrew Mattityahu. That Hebrew name joins mattan or mattat, meaning "gift," with Yah, a short form of the divine name. Read literally, the name means "gift of Yahweh"; the customary English wording is "gift of God."
The name Matthew (Greek Maththaios) comes from the same Hebrew root, so the two are close relatives, but Matias follows the Matthias line of transmission rather than the Matthew line.
Matias Name History & Origins
The Hebrew name Mattityahu is recorded in the Hebrew Bible, where it belongs to several figures, among them a Levite in the book of Chronicles and a priest in Nehemiah listed among those who sealed the covenant. The Greek form Maththias appears in the Acts of the Apostles, where Matthias is the disciple chosen by lot to take the place of Judas Iscariot among the twelve. That account gave the name a firm place in Christian naming.
The Latin form Matthias then spread through medieval Europe, and individual languages reshaped it. Spanish developed Matías, written with an accent on the second syllable, while Portuguese uses Matias without the accent. Finnish and Estonian also use Matias. The related evangelist's name, Matthew, travelled by a different Greek form, Maththaios, which produced Spanish Mateo and Portuguese Mateus.
