What Does the Name Matia Mean?

Matia is most often a feminine form of Matthew and of its close relative Matthias, and it means "gift of God." The name goes back to the Hebrew Mattityahu (מַתִּתְיָהוּ), formed from mattat, "gift," and Yah, a short form of the divine name. Greek transliterated that name as Matthaios and, in a shorter shape, Matthias; Latin kept both as Matthaeus and Matthias. "Gift of God" is the literal sense of the Hebrew parts, not a later symbolic reading added to them.

In Italy the usual masculine form of Matthias is Mattia, and Matia is a variant spelling of it; the same holds for Matija, the standard form in Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. The name is not related to the similar-sounding Marta or Maria, which come from different roots.

Matia Name History & Origins

Hebrew Mattityahu appears in the Hebrew Bible for several men, among them Mattithiah, a Levite who had charge of the pans used for the temple offerings (1 Chronicles 9:31) and temple singers and gatekeepers of the same name (1 Chronicles 15 - 16 and 25). Through Greek and Latin the name entered the languages of Europe along two branches: Matthaios and Matthaeus, which give English Matthew, Italian Matteo, French Mathieu, and Spanish Mateo; and the shorter Matthias, borne by the apostle chosen to replace Judas (Acts 1:26), which gives English Matthias, German Matthias, Nordic Matias, Italian Mattia, and South Slavic Matija.

Matia comes out of that shorter branch as a simplified spelling. Mattia in Italy and Matija in the South Slavic countries are common masculine names, and Matia appears as an occasional variant of both. The name is also given to girls, especially in English-speaking use, where it works as the feminine counterpart of Matthew and follows the ordinary pattern of pairing a masculine name with a feminine ending rather than a naming tradition of its own.
