What Does the Name Masten Mean?
Masten is chiefly a family name of the English-speaking world, and its etymology is not securely documented. The explanation most often proposed is that it is a variant spelling of the English surname Marston, also recorded as Maston. Marston is a habitational name taken from one of the several places in England called Marston, formed from the Old English elements merse, meaning "marsh," and tūn, meaning "enclosure" or "settlement." If that derivation is right, the literal sense would be "marsh settlement." The connection to Marston has not been firmly established, however, and similar-looking surnames such as Mastin, Meston, and Maxton have their own separate origins, so the meaning of Masten itself remains uncertain.
Masten Name History & Origins
Masten is recorded as a surname rather than as an inherited given name. It is close in form to the English habitational surnames Marston and Maston, and it is often grouped with them, but the resemblance alone does not prove a shared origin, and the name's documentary history is thin.
Like many family names, Masten has been used occasionally as a first name in the United States, where surnames are commonly transferred into given-name use. It has never been a common first name. The American racing driver Masten Gregory (1932 - 1985) is one of the more widely noted people who carried it in that position.
