What Does the Name Masal Mean?
Masal is a feminine given name used in Turkey. It comes from the Turkish noun masal, meaning "fairy tale" or "story." The Turkish word derives from Arabic مَثَل (mathal), which means "proverb," "example," or "similitude." In Turkish, the Arabic term shifted in sense to denote a traditional folk narrative, especially a fairy tale. The name therefore carries the customary Turkish meaning "fairy tale"; the older Arabic literal sense of "proverb" or "example" is part of its etymology but not the name's usual meaning.
Masal Name History & Origins
The word masal entered Turkish from Arabic. Arabic مَثَل (mathal) referred to a saying, example, or comparison; in Turkish, the form masal came to mean a folk tale or fairy tale. Turkish uses the word for traditional oral narratives, especially fairy tales, and forms such as Masallar appear as titles for collections of Turkish fairy tales. As a personal name, Masal is a Turkish feminine given name taken from this common noun. It is not related to the Hebrew and Yiddish mazal ("luck," "constellation"), which has a different origin despite the similar sound.
