What Does the Name Malak Mean?

Malak is an Arabic given name meaning "angel." It comes from the Arabic noun malak (ملك), whose plural malāʾikah (ملائكة) is the ordinary word for angels in the Quran. The name is used mainly for girls, though it also appears as a male name in some Arabic-speaking communities.

The deeper etymology is debated. Comparative Semitic scholarship connects Arabic malak with Hebrew malʾākh (מַלְאָךְ) and Aramaic malʾaḵā, all meaning "messenger" or "angel," from a Semitic root associated with sending. Arabic lexicographers, by contrast, traditionally group the word under the root m-l-k, the same consonants found in malik ("king") and malaka ("to own, possess"). The messenger sense is the usual explanation in comparative linguistics; the link to kingship rests on the shared consonants rather than a shared origin.

Malak Name History & Origins

Malak belongs to the core vocabulary of Arabic and of the Quran, where the singular malak and the plural malāʾikah appear often. The thirty-fifth surah is known both as Fāṭir and as al-Malāʾikah ("the Angels"). Because angels hold an important place in both Islam and Christianity, the name is used by Arabic-speaking Muslims and by Arabic-speaking Christians.

As a personal name it is used for girls in Arabic-speaking countries such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia and among other Muslim communities. The Turkish form is Melek, also meaning "angel," and related forms entered Bosnia and the Balkans through Ottoman and Islamic cultural contact. Malak is a different name from the Hebrew Malachi (מַלְאָכִי, "my messenger"), which is linked to the same "messenger" idea but has its own history.
