Makar is the Russian and Ukrainian form of the Greek name Makarios (Μακάριος), which means "blessed" or "happy." Greek makarios comes from makar, an older word for "blessed, fortunate." In the Greek New Testament the related form makarioi is the word translated as "blessed" in the Beatitudes, and Greek writers also used makar of the gods and of the dead said to dwell in the Isles of the Blessed. The Slavic name keeps the Greek sense rather than adding a separate meaning of its own.

The name reached the Slavic world through Byzantine Greek and Orthodox Christianity. Makarios was borne by several early Christian saints, most notably Macarius the Great, a fourth-century Egyptian monk linked to the desert monasteries of Scetis, whose writings circulated widely in the Orthodox East. Through the veneration of such saints the Greek name was adopted into Russian as Makar (Макар) and into Ukrainian in the same form; Hungarian also uses Makár.
