What Does the Name Maiki Mean?

Maiki is a name of more than one origin, and its meaning depends on which tradition is intended.

In Finnish and Estonian use, Maiki is a feminine name built on Maija (Finnish) and Maie (Estonian), everyday forms of Maria, the name of the mother of Jesus. Maria goes back through Latin and Greek to the Hebrew name Miriam, whose original sense is disputed; it is often explained as "beloved" or "bitter," and no single derivation is settled. The Finnish ending -kki is a familiar diminutive element, as in Annikki from Anna, so Maikki and Maiki read as affectionate forms of Maija. The German and Dutch name Maike comes from the same Maria source.

In Hawaiian use, Maiki is a customary spelling of the English name Mike, a short form of Michael. Michael comes from Hebrew Mikha'el, traditionally understood as the question "Who is like God?" and borne by the archangel in the Bible. The Hawaiian name is separate from the Hawaiian word maikaʻi, meaning "good," which looks similar but is a different word.

Maiki Name History & Origins

The Finnic forms of the name come from Maria. Christianity reached Finland with Swedish rule, and Maria entered Finnish through Swedish and Latin church usage; in ordinary speech it was shortened to Maija, Mari and Marja. The diminutive ending -kki, seen also in Annikki and Kyllikki, produced Maikki, and Maiki and Maika are recorded spellings of the same name. Estonian Maie, with the shorter variant Maiki, came from the same Maria stock, which entered Estonian use through German and Swedish church names and later spread as Estonian-language names replaced Baltic German ones in daily use.

In Hawaiian, Maiki belongs to the large group of English and biblical names that Hawaiians adapted after Western contact. Hawaiian requires every syllable to end in a vowel and does not allow the consonant endings of English, so Mike was reshaped into Maiki (also written Maike), much as other English names gained an extra vowel. Missionary-era Bible and hymn translations in the nineteenth century helped fix the Hawaiian spellings of biblical names. The name is distinct from maikaʻi, "good," and other Hawaiian renderings of Michael, such as Maika and Mikala.
