What Does the Name Maddison Mean?
Maddison is a variant spelling of the English surname Madison, a matronymic surname meaning "son of Maud." It was formed in medieval England from the personal name Maud or its pet form Madde, plus the suffix -son. Maud is the English form of Matilda, which comes from the Germanic name Mahthildis, made from maht, "might" or "strength," and hild, "battle." The literal sense of Maddison is therefore "son of Maud"; the phrase "mighty in battle" belongs to the ultimate Germanic name Matilda, not directly to Maddison itself.
Maddison Name History & Origins
The surname Madison is found in England in the Middle Ages as a byname for a son of a woman named Maud. Maud was a common woman's name in medieval England, introduced by the Normans from Old French forms such as Mahaut and Mateud, ultimately from the Germanic Matilda. The surname appears in variant spellings, and Maddison is one such variant. Madison was originally a surname in the English-speaking world, and its use as a given name is more recent. Maddison shares that history; the double-d spelling is an orthographic variant of the same surname, not a separate derivation. The 1984 film Splash featured a character named Madison, a modern fictional association that is often mentioned in accounts of the name's later use. That character is not the source of the name, which comes from the older English surname.
