What Does the Name Macallan Mean?
Macallan is a Scottish surname and place name. It comes from Scottish Gaelic Mac Ailín, meaning son of Ailín, formed from mac, son, plus the personal name Ailín. Ailín is a diminutive Gaelic given name, and it has long been compared with the name Alan, whose Gaelic form is Ailean; because of that closeness, the surname is often explained in English simply as son of Allan. Since Ailín and Ailean are separate Gaelic forms that sound alike, the precise personal name behind the surname is not always certain.
Macallan Name History & Origins
The name belongs to the Gaelic patronymic tradition of the Scottish Highlands and the northeast, in which a family name was built from mac plus an ancestor's personal name. Macallan is recorded in Morayshire, and there is a place of the same name in Moray, in the Spey valley near Craigellachie. The anglicized spelling drops the accent of Ailín and reduces the ending to a single consonant, and older records show the name varying between Macallan, Macallen, and similar forms. The Scottish Gaelic personal name element was spelled with a slender final vowel, which English spelling could not represent directly.
The word became known far beyond Scotland through The Macallan, a whisky distillery in Moray that was licensed in 1824. The distillery took its name from the area around it and, as its whisky was exported widely in the twentieth century, that brand use spread the name internationally. The distillery name is normally written with the definite article, The Macallan.
