What Does the Name Lynden Mean?
Lynden is an English name usually treated as a spelling variant of Linden or Lyndon. The core element is Old English lind, the lime tree - the tree of the genus Tilia, also called the linden - which appears in German and Dutch as Linde. On its own that element means "lime tree." In the English place name and surname Lyndon, it is joined with Old English dūn "hill," giving the sense "lime-tree hill," and the spelling Lynden is sometimes explained that way as well. A separate poetic use of Old English lind was "shield," since shields were cut from linden wood; that is a metaphor from the tree's wood, not a second root of the name.
Lynden Name History & Origins
Lyndon and Linden were English surnames before they were given names. Lyndon belongs to villages in Rutland and in the Solihull area of the West Midlands, and surnames of this kind were normally taken from the place where a family lived or held land. Linden is the English word for the lime tree and is also found as a surname. Lynden appears as a variant spelling of these surnames and, as a first name, is much less common than Lyndon, the spelling made familiar in the United States by Lyndon B. Johnson, president from 1963 to 1969.
The Dutch family name Van Lynden, borne by a noble family in the Netherlands, is a separate tradition with its own history; apart from the shared spelling, no established connection links it to the English given name.
