What Does the Name Luz Mean?
Luz means "light" in Spanish and Portuguese and comes from the Latin noun lūx (genitive lūcis), the ordinary Latin word for light; the related verb lūcēre means "to shine." The name is the everyday noun used as a personal name rather than a translation of a biblical figure's name. It is a feminine noun in both Spanish and Portuguese.
A separate Luz appears in the Hebrew Bible as a town name. Genesis 28:19 notes that Bethel had earlier been called Luz, and Judges 1:23 - 26 tells of men sent from the house of Joseph to spy out the town and of a man from Luz who later built another city of that name in Hittite territory. The Hebrew word luz means "almond" or "almond tree" in the Bible (as in Genesis 30:37), and the town name is often linked to that word, but the derivation is not certain. This Hebrew place name is not the source of the Spanish and Portuguese given name.
Luz Name History & Origins
Luz came into personal naming in the Iberian Peninsula from the Latin word for light and is closely tied to the Marian title Nuestra Señora de la Luz, "Our Lady of Light," which gave the name a devotional character in Spain, Portugal, and their overseas territories. In Spanish-speaking countries it often forms part of compound girls' names such as María de la Luz, María Luz, and Luz María; Portuguese has the parallel Maria da Luz. The Portuguese name Luzia, equivalent to Lucia, comes from the same Latin root lūx.
Because it is simply the Spanish word for light, the name also appears outside religious use, and it is found as a surname in Spain and Latin America. Spanish colonial rule carried the given name to the Philippines, where it is still used.
The biblical town of Luz is a different name that happens to share the spelling; the two are not historically connected. In recent English-language media, Luz Noceda is the main character of the animated series The Owl House, which began in 2020.
