What Does the Name Lucifer Mean?

Lucifer comes from Latin lucifer, meaning "light-bringer" (also "light-bearing"), from lux (genitive lucis), "light," and ferre, "to bring" or "to carry." In Latin the word worked as both an adjective, "light-bringing," and a noun for the morning star, the planet Venus seen at dawn, and it also served as a Roman personal name, or cognomen. Latin lucifer was used to translate Greek Phosphoros (Φωσφόρος), "light-bringer," the Greek name for the morning star. The literal sense is a bringer of light.

The devilish meaning often attached to the name is a later interpretation rather than the word's etymology. In the Latin Bible the word renders the Hebrew of Isaiah 14:12 (הֵילֵל בֶּן־שָׁחַר, "shining one, son of dawn"), a taunt against a fallen king that Christian tradition came to read as describing Satan. The derivation of that Hebrew term is disputed: some connect it to a root meaning "to shine," others to a root meaning "to howl," and it remains uncertain. Elsewhere the Latin Bible uses lucifer in a favorable sense for the morning star.

Lucifer Name History & Origins

In Roman usage the word was an everyday noun and adjective for the morning star and for anything that brings light, and it appears as a Roman cognomen. Early Christians used it as a personal name; the best-known bearer is Lucifer of Cagliari, a fourth-century bishop in Sardinia who opposed Arianism and was exiled for it. Because it was an ordinary Latin word with a positive sense, it appears in the Latin Bible for the morning star in favorable passages as well as for the fallen "morning star" of Isaiah 14:12.

The identification of Lucifer with the devil grew out of Christian reading of that Isaiah passage together with Luke 10:18, where Jesus says he saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven, and with imagery in Revelation. Early Christian writers, including Origen, applied the passage to Satan, and by the Middle Ages "Lucifer" was a standard proper name for the devil in Latin, English, and other European languages. That development rests on the word's use in one particular verse and on later theology; it is not the word's original meaning or its earliest function as a name.
