What Does the Name Louden Mean?
Louden is mainly a variant spelling of the Scottish surname Loudon, also written Loudoun. It is a habitational name, which means it identified a person by the place he came from: the parish and barony of Loudoun in Ayrshire, in the west of Scotland. The origin of that place name is not securely known. It is generally treated as early Celtic - Gaelic or Brittonic, both of which were spoken in that region - and some explanations connect part of it with a Celtic word for a fort or hill fort (Gaelic dùn), but the first element and the full derivation remain uncertain. As a given name, Louden is a transferred use of the surname, not a name with a separate origin.
Louden Name History & Origins
The surname grew out of the place name in Scotland. Loudoun in Ayrshire gave its name to a parish and a barony, and the barony was held by the Campbell family; in 1633 the head of that family was made Earl of Loudoun. Loudoun Hill, which stands in the same district, was the site of a battle in 1307 in which Robert the Bruce defeated an English force. Spellings such as Loudon and Loudoun are found in Scotland, in Ulster through Scottish settlement, and later in North America; Loudoun County, Virginia, took its name from the fourth Earl of Loudoun.
As a first name, Louden is uncommon and is a transferred use of the surname, appearing occasionally in the United States. Its best-known bearer is fictional: Louden Swain, the teenage wrestler at the center of Terry Davis's 1979 novel Vision Quest and the 1985 film made from it. That is a literary association, not the source of the name.
