What Does the Name Kwadwo Mean?

Kwadwo is an Akan day name used in Ghana, given to a boy born on Monday; its established meaning is "born on Monday." It comes from the Akan language, specifically Twi and the closely related Fante, in which Monday is Dwoada. Akan day names share the element -da (day), so Dwoada is built from dwo plus da, "day," and Kwadwo carries the Kwa- beginning found in several of the male day names, such as Kwame and Kwaku. In Twi, dwo also carries the sense of calm or quiet, so the name is customarily associated with peacefulness; that association is an interpretation added to the literal day-name meaning rather than the meaning itself.

Kwadwo Name History & Origins

Akan naming has long combined a day name with other names given by the family. The day name, sometimes described as a kradin or "soul name," is assigned from the day of the week a child is born, so a boy born on Monday is Kwadwo regardless of his family's other names. The same Monday name appears in related forms across Akan-speaking areas and the wider region, including Kojo and, in the Caribbean and the Americas, Cudjoe and Jojo.

The tradition was observed by European traders and missionaries on the Gold Coast from the seventeenth century onward, and the day names traveled with enslaved Akan speakers through the transatlantic slave trade. In Jamaica, the anglicized form Cudjoe became a common name among enslaved Africans; the Maroon leader known as Captain Cudjoe, active in the early eighteenth century, is the best-known historical bearer of that form. Kwadwo itself remains a standard Akan day name in Ghana and is also used by Ghanaians abroad.
