What Does the Name Korah Mean?

Korah is a biblical name of Hebrew origin, from Qōraḥ (קֹרַח), which is built on the root קרח (q-r-ḥ). That root supplies the verb qāraḥ, meaning "to be bald" or "to make bald," and the name is customarily explained as "baldness" or "bald." The same consonants also spell the noun qeraḥ, "ice" or "frost," so a secondary interpretation reads the name as "ice." The long-standing meaning attached to the name is "baldness."

Korah Name History & Origins

Korah appears in several places in the Hebrew Bible. The best-known figure is Korah son of Izhar, a Levite of the Kohathite clan, who led a revolt against the authority of Moses and Aaron and was destroyed with his followers (Numbers 16). The New Testament letter of Jude refers back to this episode as "the rebellion of Korah" (Jude 11). A different Korah is named as a son of Esau and an Edomite chief (Genesis 36:5, 14, 18), and a Korah son of Hebron appears in the genealogy of Judah (1 Chronicles 2:43).

The "sons of Korah" (bnei Qoraḥ) are named in the headings of several Psalms (42 - 49, 84 - 85, 87 - 88). Numbers 26:11 notes that Korah's line did not die out, and this Korahite clan is later associated with temple singers and gatekeepers. Through the biblical text the name passed into Jewish usage and into the wider stock of biblical names.
