What Does the Name Kodiak Mean?

Kodiak is an English name taken from the place name Kodiak Island in Alaska, and its established meaning, "island," comes from that source. The island's name belongs to the Alutiiq (Sugpiaq) language of the Native people of the Kodiak Archipelago, who know the island by a name commonly written Qikertaq, also rendered Qiqertaq. That Alutiiq term is customarily translated as "island," which is the meaning usually given for the name. The literal sense of the Alutiiq word is not fully settled, so "island" is best understood as the traditional translation rather than a precise word-for-word rendering.

Kodiak Name History & Origins

Kodiak entered English by way of Russian. Russian fur traders reached the island in the 1760s - Stepan Glotov's party made contact in 1763 - and in 1784 Grigory Shelikhov founded a settlement at Three Saints Bay. Russian records spelled the name Kadiak, and the modern American spelling Kodiak developed from that form. Kodiak Island is the second-largest island in the United States, and it served as the administrative center of Russian America before the capital moved to Sitka (Novo-Arkhangelsk) in 1808.

The island also gave its name to the Kodiak bear, the large brown bear of the archipelago, so the animal is named after the place rather than the reverse. As a personal name, Kodiak is a modern American use drawn directly from the Alaskan place name rather than an inherited given name with its own long history of use.
