What Does the Name Kemar Mean?
Kemar is a masculine given name used chiefly in Jamaica and in Jamaican communities abroad. Its etymology is not securely documented, and no derivation for it is well supported. The explanation most often suggested connects it with Kumar, a personal name and title of Sanskrit origin, but that link has not been documented, and a resemblance in form does not by itself show a shared origin. The safest statement is that the meaning of Kemar is uncertain.
Kemar Name History & Origins
Kemar is used mainly in Jamaica and elsewhere in the English-speaking Caribbean, and it travels with Caribbean families to Britain, the United States, and Canada. It belongs to the large group of Jamaican given names that are not biblical and not inherited from English surnames. Jamaican naming draws on several sources, including English and biblical names and Akan day names such as Kwame and Kofi; Kemar is not one of the Akan day names.
A link to the Indian name Kumar would fit a known pattern in Caribbean history. Indentured laborers from India came to Jamaica between 1845 and 1917, and their descendants became part of the island's population. Whether Kemar actually comes from Kumar, however, has not been shown.
The name is borne by several public figures in Caribbean sport and in Britain: the Barbadian cricketer Kemar Roach, the Jamaican sprinter Kemar Bailey-Cole, the Jamaican footballer Kemar Lawrence, and the English footballer Kemar Roofe.
