What Does the Name Kelce Mean?
Kelce is an English surname that has only recently come into use as a given name. No etymology specific to this spelling is well documented; it is most often treated as a shortened variant spelling of Kelsey (also spelled Kelcey), a family name taken from the villages of North Kelsey and South Kelsey in Lincolnshire, England. That place name is generally explained as an Old English personal name joined to the element ēg, "island," giving a sense along the lines of "Cēol's island." The personal name behind the place name is not settled, so the underlying meaning is best described as uncertain. It is also possible that the spelling Kelce is simply a phonetic respelling of an existing surname rather than a direct descendant of the Lincolnshire place name. The literal meaning is therefore uncertain, and the "island" explanation applies only if the Kelsey connection is correct.
Kelce Name History & Origins
Kelce is found in the English-speaking world primarily as a surname. Surnames of this kind began as bynames for people who lived at or came from a particular place, and the Lincolnshire villages of North and South Kelsey are recorded in medieval English sources; the family name Kelsey grew out of that place. The spelling Kelce is a later, shortened form of that type of surname. As a first name, Kelce is a modern and uncommon use, following the broad pattern in which English surnames are adopted as given names in the United States. Because the spelling is rare and its use as a first name is recent, a continuous documented history for Kelce specifically - as distinct from Kelsey - cannot be traced. The surname itself is now widely recognized, but that recognition does not establish a long history of the name as a given name.
