What Does the Name Kaspen Mean?
Kaspen is a rare given name used in English-speaking countries, and no settled meaning is attached to it. It is most often understood as a respelling within the family of names that includes Caspian and Casper (also spelled Kasper), but which of those, if either, is its direct source is not documented.
Caspian comes from the name of the Caspian Sea. The Latin form Caspius and the Greek Kaspios refer to the Caspians, an ancient people who lived near the sea's southern shore. The meaning of that older ethnic name is uncertain, so Caspian is best described as a place-derived name rather than one with a fixed translation.
Casper and Kasper go back to the name of one of the three Magi in Christian tradition, usually written Gaspar or Caspar in Latin and medieval European sources. A commonly cited origin is the Persian Kansbar, understood as "treasurer" or "keeper of the treasure," but that derivation is disputed and other explanations have been offered.
Because the source of Kaspen is not documented, no single literal meaning can be assigned to it with confidence.
Kaspen Name History & Origins
Kaspen is a rare spelling used chiefly in the United States and other English-speaking countries. It is one of several modern spellings built from the sounds of the Caspian - Casper group of names rather than an old hereditary form with a continuous record in a single language.
The older names in that group have long histories. Casper spread across Europe through medieval veneration of the Magi, appearing as Caspar in German, Kasper in Dutch, Danish, and Norwegian, and Gaspard in French; Saint Caspar is counted among the Three Kings in Christian tradition. Caspian was used in English first as a geographic term for the Caspian Sea before it gained ground as a personal name.
A widely known literary use is Prince Caspian, C. S. Lewis's 1951 novel in the Narnia series, which introduced the name Caspian to many readers; that is a famous later use of the name, not its source. The spelling Kaspen has no comparable literary or historical association, and its development as a distinct form is known only through its relationship to those older names.
