What Does the Name Kasaan Mean?

Kasaan is an English form of a Tlingit place name from southeast Alaska, commonly translated as "pretty town." It belongs to the Tlingit language of the Pacific Northwest coast rather than to the older English, biblical, or European stock of personal names. The Tlingit form is often written K'aasáan, and it named a village on Prince of Wales Island. The translation "pretty town" is the customary rendering found in accounts of that village; a secure word-by-word breakdown of the Tlingit elements is not available, so the precise literal sense of each part remains uncertain.

Kasaan Name History & Origins

Tlingit people lived at the site on Skowl Arm, an inlet of Kasaan Bay on the east side of Prince of Wales Island, long before the name was written in English. The Tlingit name K'aasáan was recorded by English-speaking traders, missionaries, and officials as Kasaan, and that same form was later applied to the bay and the peninsula around the village.

In the early 1900s, under the leadership of the chief Son-i-Hat, many residents left the old village for a new site a short distance away. The new settlement took the name Kasaan, while the earlier one became known as Old Kasaan, which is now a national historic landmark within the Tongass National Forest. The clan house known as the Whale House, associated with Son-i-Hat, was later moved to the new village.

Kasaan is uncommon as a personal name, and its use as a first name follows the Alaska place name rather than an independent naming tradition. The same form also appears in the names of Kasaan Bay and Kasaan Peninsula.
