What Does the Name Kaleesi Mean?

Kaleesi is a respelling of Khaleesi, a title meaning "queen" in Dothraki, the language spoken by the Dothraki people in George R. R. Martin's fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire. In that setting the word is used for the wife of a khal, the leader of a Dothraki band, and it belongs to the same small group of terms as khal and khaleen. The k spelling is a simplified English rendering of kh; both forms are said the same way and have the same sense.

Kaleesi Name History & Origins

The word khaleesi appears in George R. R. Martin's novel A Game of Thrones (1996) as one of a small number of Dothraki terms, alongside khal, khalasar, and khaleen. In the story it is the title given to Daenerys Targaryen after her marriage to the Dothraki leader Khal Drogo. The novels used only a few dozen Dothraki words; for the HBO series Game of Thrones, which began airing in 2011, linguist David J. Peterson built a fuller grammar and vocabulary, and the title became widely familiar through the character's dialogue and the way other characters address her.

Because the word sounds the same whether it is written with kh or with a single k, English speakers have also written it as Kaleesi. The change follows the ordinary English habit of reducing the kh digraph to a plain k sound. Both spellings have been given to girls in English-speaking countries, and Kaleesi is the less usual of the two. The name has no separate traditional etymology in English, Irish, or any other older naming stock; its sense comes entirely from the Dothraki title.
