What Does the Name Kaddy Mean?
Kaddy is an English feminine name generally treated as a pet form of Katherine, with the customary meaning "pure." Katherine comes from Greek Aikaterinē, whose earlier origin is uncertain; early Christian writers linked the name to the Greek adjective katharos, "pure," and that association gave Katherine its usual meaning. Kaddy belongs with the related diminutive spelling Caddy, formed in English as a familiar short form. The initial K is an alternative spelling of Caddy, not evidence of a separate root.
Kaddy Name History & Origins
Caddy, the more established spelling, has long been used in English as a familiar form of Catherine. Catherine spread through medieval Europe with devotion to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, and English developed many shortened forms from it, including Kate and Caddy. Kaddy belongs to that same nickname tradition. The related spelling Caddy is also familiar from William Faulkner's 1929 novel The Sound and the Fury, but the character's name draws on the existing nickname rather than creating it.
