What Does the Name Juno Mean?
Juno is the Latin name of the Roman goddess who was the wife of Jupiter, and its meaning is uncertain. The Latin form was Iūnō, with the genitive Iūnōnis. The explanation repeated most often today connects the name with Latin iuvenis, "young person," and with the root behind iūnior, "younger," which would give a sense such as "the youthful one." Roman writers had a different explanation of their own: Cicero said the name came from iuvare, "to help," because the goddess gave aid. That is a native folk etymology, not a proven derivation. Since the earliest forms of the name are not fully explained, no single meaning can be given with confidence.
Juno Name History & Origins
In Roman religion Juno was queen of the gods, the wife and sister of Jupiter, and one of the three deities - with Jupiter and Minerva - worshiped in the great temple on the Capitoline Hill in Rome, dedicated in the first years of the Republic. The Romans identified her with the Greek goddess Hera, and Greek stories about Hera, including her jealousy of Jupiter's lovers and her hostility toward Heracles and toward Troy, were retold of Juno.
She was worshiped under many titles that reflect different roles. As Juno Regina she was patron of the Roman state; her temple on the Aventine Hill was dedicated in 392 BC. As Juno Moneta she had a temple on the Capitoline height called the Arx, and Rome's mint was later housed there, which is how her title gave the word "money." As Juno Lucina she oversaw childbirth, and Roman women kept her festival, the Matronalia, on March 1. Juno Sospita, the "savior," was honored at Lanuvium. The sacred geese kept near her temple were said to have roused the Romans when the Gauls attacked the Capitoline in 390 BC.
The Etruscan goddess Uni was identified with Juno, and the two names resemble each other, but whether one was borrowed from the other is not settled. In later European use Juno appears as a feminine given name. Modern references to the word come mostly from things named for the goddess: the asteroid 3 Juno, discovered in 1804, and NASA's Juno spacecraft, launched in 2011, which has orbited Jupiter since 2016. The 2007 film Juno uses the name for its teenage main character.
