What Does the Name Jun Mean?
Jun is a given name in Korean, Japanese, and Chinese, and its meaning depends on the character used to write it. In Korean, Jun (준) is a Sino-Korean syllable drawn from Chinese characters: 俊 means "talented" or "handsome," 準 means "standard" or "level," 濬 means "deep" or "to dredge," and 峻 means "high" or "steep." Because one sound can be written with many characters, the meaning travels with the hanja the parents choose, and Korean records preserve that character.
In Japanese, Jun (じゅん) is written with kanji such as 純 "pure, unmixed," 潤 "moisture, richness," 順 "order, obedience," and 淳 "simple, honest." These are Sino-Japanese readings, so the sound jun entered Japanese along with the characters and does not carry meaning by itself.
In Mandarin, the romanization "Jun" most often stands for jùn (fourth tone), as in 俊 "handsome, talented" and 駿 "fine horse," but the same letters also spell jūn (first tone) in names such as 君 "lord, gentleman" and 軍 "army." Tones keep these names distinct in speech even when the romanization looks identical.
Jun Name History & Origins
Chinese characters and Chinese-style administration reached the Korean peninsula during the Three Kingdoms period, and by the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties elite families used characters for both surnames and given names. Jun can stand alone as a one-syllable given name or form part of a two-syllable name such as Min-jun, Jun-ho, and Jun-seo. Because the hanja are registered with the name, two Koreans called Jun may write it differently.
In Japan, Jun belongs to a set of short given names read from kanji. It is used for boys and girls and often combines with a second element, as in Jun'ichirō (潤一郎), Junko (純子), and Junpei. The novelist Tanizaki Jun'ichirō is a well-known bearer of a name built on 潤. Names of this kind are chosen for their written form as much as their sound, and one reading can be spelled several ways.
Jun entered English mainly through romanization of these East Asian names. Korean 준 is written Jun in South Korea's Revised Romanization; the older McCune-Reischauer system writes the same syllable Chun, and personal spellings such as Joon also appear. Japanese and Chinese names follow their own romanization systems, which is why a Chinese jùn and a Korean jun can look identical in English. In English-speaking countries, Jun may also appear as a short form of Junior or Juniper, and it is unrelated to the month name June, which comes from Latin Iunius.
