What Does the Name Joslin Mean?
Joslin is an English surname and given name derived from the medieval personal name Joselin, a pet form of Jocelyn. Jocelyn came into English through Old French Joscelin, usually traced to a Germanic name formed with Gaut, the name of the Goths, plus a diminutive ending. In that explanation the literal sense is "little Goth." The exact Germanic form and suffix are uncertain, and some accounts treat the etymology of Jocelyn as unresolved. A separate popular gloss, "joyful," comes from the resemblance to Latin iocundus ("pleasant, cheerful"); it is a later association rather than the Germanic derivation.
Joslin Name History & Origins
The surname Joslin belongs to the medieval English practice of forming hereditary family names from personal names. Joselin and related spellings were in use in England after the Norman Conquest, when Old French names such as Joscelin were brought over. The ending -in is an Old French diminutive suffix, so Joslin has the form of a familiar or diminutive version of the longer name. In medieval England Jocelyn was used as a man's name, and the surname preserves that older use. Spellings vary with Joslyn and Joscelyn.
Joslin is also used as a given name, generally as a feminine variant of Jocelyn or Joslyn. As a first name it preserves the surname form and is tied to the modern English use of Jocelyn rather than to a separate medieval given-name tradition.
