What Does the Name Joon Mean?
Joon is a Korean given name, a romanization of the single syllable 준, and its meaning depends on the hanja (Chinese characters) chosen to write it. Korean given names are usually written with hanja, so the sound is fixed but the meaning is selected from a set of homophones. The most common characters read 준 include 俊, "talented, outstanding, handsome"; 準, "standard, accurate, level"; 濬 or 浚, "to dredge, to deepen"; 駿, "fine horse, steed"; 峻, "high, steep"; 晙, "early morning light"; and 珺, "beautiful jade". Two people named Joon may therefore carry entirely different meanings, and some Korean names are written without hanja at all, in which case there is no character-based meaning to point to.
A separate word spelled Joon in English belongs to Persian: it is the colloquial form of jān (جان), "life" or "soul", from Middle Persian gyān. In Persian it works mainly as a term of endearment attached to a name, as in "Ali joon", and is not a given name in its own right in the way the Korean syllable is. It shares no origin with the Korean name.
Joon Name History & Origins
The syllable 준 is used in Korean both alone and as one element of a two-syllable name, as in Joon-ho, Min-joon, Joon-young, and Joon-hyuk. Because Korean naming followed the Chinese practice of composing names from meaningful characters, parents chose a hanja for each syllable; a family sometimes also repeats one syllable across a generation, a custom known as the dollimja. Korean was written with Chinese characters before the invention of the Hangul alphabet in the fifteenth century, but the syllable is read in Korean, not Chinese, so the character supplies meaning while the pronunciation stays Korean.
Spelling variation comes partly from romanization. The McCune - Reischauer system represents the syllable as chun or jun, while the Revised Romanization of Korean uses jun. Joon is a common English-language spelling that reflects how the vowel sounds to English speakers, and Juhn also appears. These are different ways of writing the same Korean syllable rather than different names.
In English, Joon also appears as a short form of the name Juniper, as in the 1993 film Benny & Joon, whose main character is Juniper Pearl. That is a nickname use of an existing English name, not a separate naming tradition, and it should not be confused with the Korean name or with the Persian word.
