What Does the Name Jina Mean?

Jina is most often explained as "conqueror" or "victor," from Sanskrit jina-, a word built on the verb root ji-, "to conquer, win." It is related to Sanskrit jaya, "victory," and jayati, "he conquers." In Indian religious usage the word describes a conqueror in the spiritual sense, someone who has overcome craving, aversion, and karma. It is the title given to the 24 Tirthankaras of Jainism, including Mahavira, and Buddhist texts also use jina as an epithet of the Buddha. The English word Jain comes from Sanskrit jaina, "follower of the Jina," so the name and the religion share one root. As a personal name, Jina is used in India, more often for girls.

A second, unrelated name is Korean Jin-a (진아), also written in Latin letters as Jinah or Jin-a. It is usually composed of two Sino-Korean syllables, a first such as 珍 "precious," 眞 "true," or 進 "advance," and a second such as 雅 "elegant," 娥 "beautiful woman," or 我 "self." Because each family chooses its own characters, the meaning differs from one bearer to the next, and some Korean names are given without hanja at all. The overlap in sound with the Sanskrit word is coincidental: Korean and Sanskrit are unrelated languages.

In English-speaking countries, Jina also appears as a spelling variant of Gina, a short form of Regina and of names ending in -gina, such as Georgina, Virginia, and Eugenia. Separately, in Swahili jina is the ordinary noun for "name"; that word has no etymological link to the Sanskrit name.

Jina Name History & Origins

Sanskrit jina is an old religious term. Jain tradition applies it to the 24 Tirthankaras, the teachers who have conquered the cycle of rebirth; Mahavira, the 24th and best known, is dated by tradition to the middle of the first millennium BCE. The name of the religion, Jain, is a later derivative of the same word. Over the centuries the term passed into regional Indian languages, and forms such as Jin and Jina came into use as personal names in India, among Jains and others.

The Korean name Jin-a developed separately, within Korean naming practice. Korean given names are typically two syllables drawn from Sino-Korean characters, with the second syllable often a feminine element such as a; the first syllable is frequently shared with siblings or cousins of the same generation. When such names are written in Latin letters, the syllable break may be marked with a hyphen or dropped, which is why Jin-a, Jinah, and Jina all appear for the same name.

In English-speaking countries, Jina has been used as a variant spelling of Gina, the familiar short form of Regina and of feminine names ending in -gina. That path gives the spelling a background distinct from both the Sanskrit and the Korean names, so an American or British Jina may owe her name to any of the three traditions.
