What Does the Name Jehan Mean?
Jehan is an Old French form of the name that appears in modern French as Jean and in English as John. It descends through Latin Iohannes and Greek Iōannēs from Hebrew Yochanan, whose elements are commonly explained as "Yahweh" plus "gracious, merciful," giving the customary meaning "God is gracious." In medieval France, Jehan was the usual written form of this masculine name before Jean became standard.
Separately, in South Asia and the Middle East, Jehan is also used as a spelling of the Persian name Jahān, meaning "world." This use comes from Persian jahān and appears in Persian, Urdu, and languages influenced by them, as in the Mughal title Nur Jehan, "light of the world." It is not related to the French name; the two simply share a spelling in English.
Jehan Name History & Origins
In medieval France, Jehan was a common written form of the masculine name that later became Jean. It appears in the names of the poet Jehan de Meun, who continued the Roman de la Rose in the thirteenth century; the chronicler Jehan Froissart in the fourteenth; and the earlier poet and playwright Jehan Bodel. The feminine counterpart was normally written Jehanne, the ancestor of modern French Jeanne and of English Joan.
The Norman French spoken in England after the Norman Conquest used forms such as Jehan and Johan, and these were among the routes by which the name entered English as John. As Jean became the ordinary French spelling, Jehan passed out of everyday use, surviving mainly in historical and literary texts and in occasional later revivals.
The South Asian name is a different story. It represents Persian jahān, "world," and entered courtly and later everyday use in the Mughal sphere and beyond. The Mughal empress known as Nur Jehan, wife of Jahangir, took that title, and the Mughal princess Jehan Ara Begum bore the name as well. It continues as a given name in Pakistan, India, and among families of South Asian origin elsewhere.
