What Does the Name Jariya Mean?

Jariya is mainly a feminine given name in Thailand. It goes back to the Pali word cariyā (related to Sanskrit caryā), which means "conduct," "behavior," "practice," or "course of life." In Thai use the name carries the sense of good conduct, manners, and moral behavior, and the same root appears in the Thai word jariyatham, "ethics" or "morality."

A second, unrelated source of the spelling is the Arabic noun jāriya, which names a girl, a young woman, or a maidservant, and can also describe flowing water. From that word come the Islamic phrase sadaqah jāriyah, "ongoing charity," and the Malay and Indonesian jariah, "charity" or "alms." The Pali and Arabic origins are distinct, and a given spelling does not by itself show which of them a family intended.

Jariya Name History & Origins

The Pali term cariyā belongs to Theravada Buddhist literature, where it refers to the conduct or practice by which a person advances toward awakening. The Cariyāpiṭaka, a book of the Khuddaka Nikāya in the Pali Canon, gathers verses on the Buddha's conduct in earlier lives. Because Pali is the scriptural language of Thai Buddhism, Thai personal names are often taken from Pali words of this type, and Jariya is one of them, written จริยา and also transliterated Chariya.

The Arabic jāriya traveled with Islam into South and Southeast Asia, where it appears in the religious phrase for continuing charity and in the Malay - Indonesian form jariah. Both strands of the name are old; neither is a modern coinage, and the two developed separately in different language communities.
