What Does the Name Ivah Mean?

Ivah is a Hebrew place name whose meaning is not settled. In the Hebrew Bible it appears as ʿIvvah (עִוָּה), the name of a city that was under Assyrian power. A very close form, Avva (עַוָּא), is used in 2 Kings 17:24, and most scholars take the two to be the same place. One common suggestion connects the name to the Hebrew root ʿ-w-h, which in other words means "to bend" or "twist" and can suggest distortion or crookedness; if that link is correct, the place name could be understood loosely as "bent place" or "twisted place." This is only a proposal. Other explanations have been offered, and no derivation is universally accepted, so the safest statement is that the meaning is uncertain.

Ivah Name History & Origins

Ivah belongs to the Hebrew Bible. In 2 Kings 18:34 and 19:13, and in the parallel passage Isaiah 37:13, it is named in the speech of the Assyrian official Rabshakeh, who lists it among the cities whose gods did not save them from the Assyrian king. The closely related Avva appears in 2 Kings 17:24, where the king of Assyria is said to have brought people from Avva, among other places, to settle in the towns of Samaria. Because the two forms are so similar, they are usually treated as one city in Mesopotamia or Syria, but its exact location is not agreed on and no identification is certain.

As a personal name, Ivah is uncommon. Where it is used as a given name, it reflects the biblical place name rather than a separate root. It also looks like the unrelated feminine name Iva, which comes from Slavic and Germanic naming traditions, but the resemblance does not mean the two share an origin.
